How to Wear Fall/Winters Colors When You Are Not a Fall/Winter

Every year, as soon as the first leaf hits the ground, fashion collectively decides we all have to start dressing like the foliage. Rust, camel, mustard, burgundy. But what if you’re not a “Fall or Winter” color season? I’m not - I’m a summer! And if you feel like olive green or ruby red make you look a bit sickly and vaguely sleep-deprived, you’re not alone.

Guess what? You can absolutely wear fall shades. You can be any color season and still join the party. There are a few tricks and tips to shopping in every season without betraying your palette while presenting your best self.

1. Mix and match tops.

Start with a color that loves you (a shirt, turtleneck, or tee in your tone) and layer the “wrong” color over it: a blazer, coat, or knit in those cozy autumn hues. That way, your face stays radiant while the rest of you is in style.

2. Keep the neckline open.

Here is my trick...An open neckline breaks the color near your face and lets your natural tones breathe. Nothing will flatter you more than your skin tone. Think undone buttons, V-necks, or an off-the-shoulder long sleeve.

3. Play with bottoms and shoes.

You don’t need to wear fall colours near your face at all. Add them through trousers, skirts, or shoes. A caramel flat or oxblood skirts a subtle nod to autumn that won’t fight with your complexion.

4. Accessorize cleverly.

Gold hoops, tortoiseshell sunglasses, paisley scarves, a warm-toned bag - accessories let you flirt with the season instead of fully committing. It also spares your bank of the fleeting nature of seasonal trends.

5. Adjust your makeup.

If all else fails, my backup trick is to wear lipstick in your color palette. Blush and eyeshadow can work too but nothing is quite as powerful as lipstick. And if you still don’t know what your color season is, enroll in my course to find out. I’ll also go over the best makeup colors for your color season.

Wearing fall/winter colours when you’re not a fall/winter isn’t a fashion faux pas, it’s just a question of styling.  You can absolutely embrace the season’s mood without disappearing into a pile of burnt orange. Play with placement, balance with your tones, and lean on texture and accessories to keep things feeling intentional.

Remember: style isn’t seasonal, it’s personal. Curating a wardrobe that is intentional, versatile, and unique is what it’s all about!

Lili
