How to Wear Your Vacation Pieces Back Home

There is always that moment after a vacation when you unpack your suitcase and look at your clothes with a little sadness.

The breezy dress that looked perfect by the sea.
The raffia bag that was suddenly your entire personality.
The linen pants you wore to dinner with sandals and slightly salty hair.

And then you are back home.

The emails are back. The errands are back. The calendar is back. Suddenly the same pieces that felt effortless on vacation can feel a little too “resort,”  or a little too “why am I dressed like I am going to the beach when I am actually going to Trader Joe’s?”

But I do not believe vacation clothes should only live for vacation.

If you love a piece, and it makes you feel good, it deserves more than one week of glory and eleven months in closet prison.

The trick is to change the context around it.

A vacation piece usually feels very summery because of how we style it: flat sandals, woven bag, raffia earrings…Back home, we simply need to ground it a little.

Not kill the mood. Just make it city-friendly.

A breezy dress does not need to be saved for a hotel breakfast. Add a denim jacket, a blazer like you can see on the pic, a sleek flat, a loafer, or an elevated sneakers, and it can work for lunch, casual meetings, or a dinner in the city. The dress stays easy, but the styling gives it direction.

The raffia bag is another one. On vacation, it makes sense with everything because you are in the fantasy. Back home, I like it best when it is contrasted with more urban pieces: denim, tailored trousers, a black dress, a button-down, or clean sandals. If the whole outfit is beachy, it can feel like you are trying to find the nearest boardwalk. If only the bag is beachy, it feels intentional.

And linen pants? Please keep wearing them. They are one of the most useful summer pieces when styled well. Instead of only pairing them with a bikini top or a loose vacation blouse, try them with a fitted tank, a sharp belt, a beautiful sandal, gold jewelry, or even a lightweight knit. Easy, but not sloppy.

This is really the secret: vacation pieces need contrast.

If the piece is soft, add something structured.
If the print is playful, pair it with something simple.
If the bag is very beachy, keep the rest more polished.
If the dress is loose, choose a shoe or accessory that gives the look a little shape.

You do not need to turn your summer clothes into serious clothes. That would be sad.

You just need to give them a new role.

The goal is not to look like you are still on vacation. The goal is to keep a little of that ease in your everyday life.

Because maybe that is what we actually loved about those clothes in the first place. Not just the dress, or the bag, or the sandals, but the way we felt wearing them: lighter, freer, less overthought.

And I think that feeling deserves to come home with us.

So before you put your vacation pieces away, try them again. Pair them with your city basics. Add structure. Change the shoes. Swap the beach bag for leather, or keep the raffia one and make the rest more polished.

You may find that your vacation wardrobe has a lot more range than you thought.

And if anyone thinks you look a little too relaxed for real life, honestly, good.

Bisous my friend!
