Yes, We’re Showing Our Socks

There was a time when the goal with socks was basically to make sure nobody saw them.

No-show socks. Tiny little ankle socks. Anything to avoid that strip of fabric between your shoe and your pants.

Well, we have apparently changed our minds.

Socks are very much meant to be seen right now, and I actually love it because they can add texture, color and a little personality to an outfit without requiring you to buy an entirely new wardrobe.

The key is making them look intentional.

With Loafers

This is probably the easiest place to start.

Try loafers with a fine ribbed sock and cropped jeans or trousers. I especially like chocolate brown, burgundy, charcoal, cream or even a soft red if you want a little color.

With Sneakers

This one can be a little trickier because it has to look very intentional. Otherwise, it can quickly look like we simply didn't know what socks to put on.

Of course, the easiest option is the sporty combination: leggings + white socks.

Pair it with a trench or blazer and a cap, and you have the classic "cool girl" outfit.

But if you want to take it a step further and make the outfit feel more polished, move away from the obvious sporty look and really incorporate the sock into the outfit.

I usually prefer a sock that relates to another color somewhere in the look. It doesn't have to match perfectly, but staying within the same color family creates a much more cohesive result.

I love how, in these examples, the gray and beige socks feel like part of the overall color story rather than something that was added at the end.

With Mary Janes and Heels

The combination of Mary Janes and socks can get very cute, very quickly.

A sheer sock, fine knit or simple ribbed style keeps it more sophisticated. If you're already wearing a feminine shoe, you don't necessarily need bows, lace, ruffles and hearts happening on the sock too.

Unless that is your style. Then, obviously, proceed.

As for heels: yes with pumps, no with sandals.

For me, an open-toe shoe with a sock is just a little too much of a clash.

A Special Note on Socks With Skirts

Pay attention to where the sock stops on your leg.

Different lengths can completely change the proportions of an outfit, so play around in front of the mirror. Sometimes folding a sock down by an inch is enough to make the entire outfit suddenly work.

The Easiest Rule

If you're nervous about visible socks, don't make the sock the most exciting thing happening in the outfit.

An easy place to start is by choosing a sock that connects to one of the main colors in your outfit so everything feels harmonious.

Start with a great neutral: brown, burgundy, gray, navy, cream or black. Choose a nice texture and let just a little bit show.

Here are a few that I like:

Once that starts feeling normal, then we can discuss red socks. ;)

Bisous!
