The Art of the Transitional Outfit

September dressing is really about one thing: layering without pretending it is already cold outside.

You do not need to pack away your summer clothes and suddenly start wearing heavy knits and boots. Transitional dressing works best when you mix pieces from different seasons so your outfit feels a little more fall, while still making sense for the actual temperature.

Start with the lighter pieces you are already wearing and add one layer.

A tank with trousers and a blazer.
A summer dress with loafers and a lightweight jacket.
A skirt with a thin knit.
A T-shirt with jeans and an overshirt.

The idea is simple: do not switch seasons, layer them.

This is also where you can start introducing a little more fall texture without committing to a full fall outfit. A lightweight suede jacket, a soft knit cardigan, a leather belt, a textured blazer or an overshirt in a heavier cotton can make even a very summery base feel more seasonal.

Jackets become incredibly useful here. A blazer, trench, denim jacket, chore jacket or lightweight suede jacket can completely change the feeling of an outfit without making you overheat.

Shoes help too. You can start moving away from very summery sandals and bring back loafers, ballet flats, sneakers or a lighter ankle boot while keeping the rest of the outfit fairly light.

And pay attention to fabric weight.

You want pieces that visually start leaning toward fall without actually feeling heavy. Think cotton, denim, lightweight knits, linen blends, silk, suede and lighter leather.

The biggest mistake is trying to dress for the season you want instead of the weather you actually have.

September is not quite summer and not quite fall.

Which, wardrobe-wise, is actually the fun part.
