The Subtle Art of Spring Layering

Spring is so many people’s favorite style season because we get to layer! Layering is all fun and games, until we actually have to layer. Have you ever been caught in the rain? Or an unexpected warm afternoon? And unfortunately the sudden cold temperatures that makes you feel you’re back in the depths of January. Therefore, layering is ‘‘serious’’ business!

So here are a few tricks to help you get through unpredictable weather and showcase your styling prowess! It’s a season where you can easily stand out without sacrificing your comfort. Actually, the more sneaky layers, the more interesting your outfit.

The Building Blocks of Spring Layers

Let’s start with the basics, okay? It’s not rocket science, you’ll need three layers - lightweight, mid, and outerwear. Of course you can throw on a scarf and accessorize at your leisure. But relying on anymore to keep you warm will result in you either being too warm or too bulky.

  • Lightweight base layers

As these are usually in direct contact with your skin, the fabric is what will keep you warm and yet should be breathable. I suggest cotton, silk, linen and my favorite, silk wool

  • Mid layers

These are my favorite as we can have so much fun! I suggest experimenting with knits, vests and cardigans! There are so many colorful options everywhere and for my more proficient shoppers - Etsy!

  • Outerwear

This is the final item that you can easily remove or put on depending on the changing weather. Trench coats are staples, a lightweight blazer is always stylish and there’s nothing quite as versatile as what I call an indoor/ outdoor  jacket!

Must-Have Spring Layering Pieces

Now I don’t believe in a one size fits all approach to basically anything. But I do believe in versatile pieces that can be adapted for any style. When it comes to spring I want to give you a few items that you can always rely on when putting an outfit together and that will even more importantly save you time!

The Lightweight Trench

Contrary to Burberry belief, trenches come in different shapes, sizes and colors. They’re not just women with a Classic style, even an avant garde style can embrace the versatility of a trench coat with an unexpected silhouette or an exciting fabric like leather or suede.

The Cardigan

A quality cardigan will quickly become your go-to layer when running out the door. Whether you are going for a casual errand run or dressing up for some live music bar, a cardigan will keep you just the right amount of warm.

The Sleeveless Vest

I know not everyone is sold on the vest. Perhaps you don’t think it works for everyone's style, but once we venture away from the classic look, there are infinite options and can be very versatile no matter your personal style. Have a look at what I found. I hope you will see one that you like!

The scarf that doubles as a wrap

Scarves are one of my favorite accessories, they transform outfits and can completely change your vibe based on how you wear your scarf - so have some fun dressing up. Here are some plain colored ones that can work with a tone of different styles and color palettes.

Layering is the key to functionality and style but it doesn’t have to feel hard to make all the layers work. Actually, it’s a great way to rediscover your own wardrobe by pairing unexpected pieces together. I absolutely loved pairing a vest with a white button down with jeans and my trench and now it’s my go to work look. And of course I live in San Francisco, so I’m not going anywhere without my wool cashmere scarf!

Bisous, Bisous!
